Is Your Espresso Equipment PSSR Compliant?

For anyone running a professional coffee setup in a pub, hotel, or coffee shop, there is a technical requirement that often gets overlooked until an insurance renewal or a safety audit comes around: PSSR.

If your espresso machine uses a boiler to create steam, it isn't just an appliance; it's a pressure system. In the UK, this means it has to comply with the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000.

What does compliance actually look like?

A lot of owners assume that as long as the machine is serviced and the coffee tastes good, they are covered. However, PSSR compliance is specifically about the safety of the pressure vessel. To be compliant, you need three things:

First, you need a Written Scheme of Examination (WSE). This is a formal document that outlines exactly which parts of your machine need to be checked and how often. If you don't have a WSE for your specific boiler, you aren't compliant.

Second, that inspection has to be done by a "Competent Person." This is a legal term for a qualified engineer who has the specific expertise to certify that a pressure system is safe.

Finally, your certification needs to be current. Most commercial machines require a safety check every 12 months. If your last certificate is over a year old, your equipment has fallen out of compliance.

Why it's worth getting right

It can feel like a lot of paperwork, but there are two very practical reasons to stay on top of this.

The Insurance Factor: This is where most businesses get caught out. Many commercial insurance policies for hospitality venues require PSSR compliance. If you have a boiler incident and can't produce a valid WSE or a current certificate, your insurer may refuse to pay the claim.

Staff and Guest Safety: A boiler is a powerful piece of equipment. Regular PSSR checks ensure your safety valves are actually working, which prevents the risk of a catastrophic failure in the middle of a shift.

A note on servicing vs. examination

It's a common mistake to think a routine service is the same as a PSSR examination. A service is about the quality of the output changing gaskets, cleaning the machine, and ensuring the coffee is right. A PSSR examination is a legal safety check on the boiler's integrity. While a good engineer can often do both in one visit, make sure you are explicitly asking for the PSSR sign-off.

If you are not sure where your paperwork is, it's worth checking now. If you don't have a Written Scheme of Examination or a certificate from the last 12 months, a quick call to a qualified engineer will get you sorted and keep your business compliant and protected.
